Where this strap comes from
The CGU-1/B is the cargo tie-down used to restrain loads and vehicles inside military transport aircraft — C-130 Hercules, C-17 Globemaster — and on 463L master pallets. It is built to MIL-PRF-27260 / SAE AS27260, and it turns up in airdrop rigging too, around the outriggers on Type V platforms.
Rated 5,000 lb working load: it has to take 5,000 lb with no damage and 6,000 lb with limited damage. No knot to tie, and none to get wrong in a crosswind at two in the morning. It does not shrink when wet and it does not rot in the sun the way manila does.
What it is not. This is a cargo strap by designation. No authority has approved it for securing aircraft and we make no such claim. Aircraft on carrier decks are held by chain — TD-1A/TD-1B assemblies — not webbing, whatever anyone tells you.
Why the stakes matter, when you need them
A strap is only as good as what it is fastened to. Tie-down rings at an established airfield are set in concrete. A grass strip, a farm field or a gravel pad has nothing, and improvised anchors are where aircraft get damaged overnight.
At three feet long, 7/8 in thick and 3.5 kg apiece, these are an entirely different article from a tent peg. The length is the point: what holds a stake down is the column of soil above and around it, so a stake driven three feet in resists being walked out under a gusting load in a way a short one cannot.
How it compares
The FAA's old tie-down advisory recommended a tie-down able to resist about 3,000 lb. That circular was withdrawn in 2023, but the figure is the one most pilots still carry in their heads. These straps are rated 5,000 lb working load each.
No authority has approved this strap for securing aircraft and we make no such claim; your POH is the reference that matters. What we can give you is the comparison and the hardware.
How to set it up
- On grass or dirt, drive a stake at each wing and at the tail, angled away from the aircraft so the pull tends to seat it rather than lift it. On a paved ramp, use the rings already there.
- Hook the snap hook into the aircraft's tie-down ring and the ratchet end into the anchor.
- Pull the slack through the ratchet, then tension until snug. Do not overtighten — excessive tension stresses the airframe.
- Check stakes after rain. Ground that has gone soft holds a stake far less well than the ground you drove it into.

Safety
- Do not exceed the straps' 5,000 lb (2,250 kg) rating. Not for overhead lifting.
- No holding capacity is stated for the stakes. What a stake will hold depends entirely on the ground it is in — sand, clay, frost and saturated soil all behave differently — so judge it on site and use more anchors if in doubt.
- Inspect the webbing before each use. Retire any strap with cuts, fraying, burns or damaged hardware.
- These are tie-downs for a parked aircraft, not a substitute for a hangar in severe weather.
