Chromium alloy white cast iron grinding media, 17 mm to 125 mm (5/8 in to 5 in). The chromium carbides give wear life that carbon steel cannot reach in abrasive ore, which is where the higher first cost is repaid.

Above roughly 650 BHN only the Rockwell C test is valid — the Brinell indenter ball deforms against metal this hard and reads false. A Brinell figure quoted at this hardness is an estimate converted from Rockwell, not a measurement.
Chromium content
The common grade carries 12% chromium; higher chromium grades are available where the duty is more abrasive or more corrosive. Material sits in the ASTM A532 abrasion-resistant cast iron family (12–28% Cr), equivalent to GB/T 17445.
