Through-hardened carbon and low-alloy steel grinding balls for ball mills and
rod mills, from 12 mm to 152 mm (1/2 in to 6 in). Supplied to ore,
cement, lime, aggregate and coal-pulverising duties.
Two processes, one ladder
Rolled balls, 12–50 mm (1/2–2 in). Rolled direct from bar with
in-line heat treatment, giving continuous grain flow and uniform hardness through
the section — a genuine advantage over the uneven effect of hammer forging.
Available in two carbon ranges: 0.7/0.9% C finishing at 600 BHN,
and 0.6/1% C at a 350 BHN minimum.
Forged balls, 63 mm (2-1/2 in) and over. Where grinding is by
impact rather than abrasion, forging from billet keeps the larger sizes
economical without giving up toughness.

Figures are calculated from nominal dimensions at the stated density and agree with the published mill tables to within rounding. They size a mill charge; they are not a certificate. Hardness is verified per ISO 6508 (Rockwell C) or ISO 6506 (Brinell) on request.
Selecting a size
Larger balls grind by impact and suit coarse feed and harder ores.
Smaller balls present far more surface per tonne of charge — a 12 mm ball
gives roughly 160 times the pieces per tonne of a 152 mm ball — and grind
by abrasion, which is what fine product needs.
Most mills run a graded charge rather than a single size. Tell us the mill
diameter, feed size and target product and we will recommend the ladder.
Also available
High chrome cast balls where wear life matters more than first cost, and
cylpebs, slugoids or helipebs for fine grinding. See the
grinding media guide for the full comparison.
