Unbreakable Wire Rope Punch — Kenter (Link) Shackle Taper Pin Removal

No more broken handles, no more splinters. The flexible wire-rope shaft between the handle and the head is the whole point of this tool: a wooden-handled punch eventually splits, snaps or splinters with repeated striking, and the wire rope doesn't. The flexible joint also makes the head easy to position against the pin in tight or awkward spots where a rigid handle fights you. Same use as our standard Drive Pin Punch — removing the locking taper pin from a Kenter (link) shackle during disassembly — just built to keep working after the wooden version would have failed. Heat-treated head (shatter resistant), urethane ring to reduce chipping, long two-handed rubber grip to lessen shock from blows.

Use

1. Remove the lead plug first — melt with a propane or acetylene torch, or drill it out.
2. Position the punch head on the small end of the taper pin — the opposite side from where the lead plug goes.
3. Strike firmly with a sledgehammer to drive the pin out.

Sizing

Currently available in three sizes, matched to Kenter taper pin hole diameter. Smaller sizes are not currently available.

Safety

• Use appropriate PPE: safety glasses, gloves, steel-toed boots.
• Ensure secure footing before striking.
• Never strike while chain is under load.
• Lead plug must be removed before use.
• Use the correct size for your Kenter diameter.
